This varied hike to the Brunnenkopfhütte, in the Ammergau Alps, starts at the visitor parking lot of Linderhof Palace, one of the four famous castles of King Ludwig II.
A wide forest path leads steadily but pleasantly uphill through a shady forest. The path is accompanied by a babbling brook that flows down into the Ammer River in several terraces.
Don’t be put off by the rough, stony terrain at the beginning, as after about two kilometers the path transforms into a firm and easily walkable forest road. This leads further through dense woods and, with increasing altitude, repeatedly offers magnificent views of the surrounding Bavarian mountains.
Upon reaching the Brunnenkopfhütte, a narrow path leads the final 50 meters or so up to the summit cross. The view over the Graswang valley, with the Kreuzspitze and Friederspitze peaks opposite, is unforgettable.
Those who wish can also stay overnight at the hut, provided they have reserved a bed in advance. The Brunnenkopfhütte has 35 beds in a dormitory-style room. Reservations can only be made online via the corresponding booking portal.
We recommend Oberammergau as the starting point for this hike. The town offers an outdoor swimming pool, various restaurants, and an alpine coaster. It’s perfect for a weekend getaway. The town has everything a holidaymaker could wish for.
Anyone looking for a family-friendly, short, and exciting hike in the Ammergau Alps will find it at Linderhof Palace and the hike to the Brunnenkopfhütte mountain hut. The tour offers everything to keep children entertained, especially if you have a suitable story to tell. In our case, it was a gnome who accompanied us on our hike through the forest. Along the way, nature was experienced and explored with all the senses. For us, it’s one of the most beautiful hikes in the Ammergau Alps.
